Shield weights

Posted by Alex Barnes at August 12. 2008
From what I've seen so far, AAF has taken quite a good look at the mechanics, theory, practicality and safety of fighting which I really appreciate. The odd thing I find is that AAF seems to have heavier shields than what I expect.

There are numerous discussions over sword weight and armour (or lack of) which makes the fighter move quickly and easily but they still use heavy shields.

I went mad last night and weighted both my 60cm dia round shield and 120cm long kite shield and the both weighed 1.9kg. The round shield has a boss to make it weigh the same as the larger shield.

Should we continue to over work shields? They may not last as long (but that really depends on how you use them) but my last kite shield lasted me years.

As a side note, I weighed my 60cm hand axe and it came in at 550gms. Considering that a find with a shaft of about 1m weighed in at 770gms, it seems to be pretty close.

Cheers
Alex

Well, I can't talk. My kite shield is insanely overengineered and my round isn't much better.
