Regular Events
The AAF holds regular events, weekly or monthly, which do not appear on our Calendar on the right-hand side of the front page. Our regular events are:
- Combat Training (weekly)
- Craft Nights (weekly)
- Archery (weekly)
- Picnic Feasts (monthly)
- Armouring Workshops (irregularly, on demand)
Combat Training
The Ancient Arts Fellowship holds re-enactment fighting as one of its primary goals. Fighting is fun and safe, when done according to the combat rules.
We train twice a week, in two different locations - one centrally located and the other in Belconnen.
Information and articles about our training.
Lake Ginninderra Training
Saturdays, 2pm - 5pm (or 3pm - 6pm during daylight saving months).
On weekends, we train on the shores of Lake Ginninderra. We have recently moved our training to here after many years at Latham. The training ground is off McDermott Pl, which runs of Joynton Smith Drive. There are barbeque facilities, as well as drinking water and amenities.
Midweek Training
Tuesday evenings, starting at around 6pm.
Midweek, we train at the ANU, outside the John Dedman Building.
For more information about training times or venues, or if you have any other questions, please contact the Chief Marshall.
Craft Nights
We hold regular Craft Nights for people to make costume, jewellry or accessories. These take place on Tuesday evenings starting at around 6pm. This is the same time and place as Midweek Training (see map above), so on Tuesday nights there's something for everyone. Come along and learn to swing a sword, sew a tunic or make a belt.
Note: There will be no Craft Nights until next year, due to exam season and the end of the academic year. Midweek training will continue as normal.
Archery
We train with the Canberra Archers on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sunday of every month, weather permitting, from 9am till midday. Field fees are $5 per session unless you are also a member of the Canberra Archers. We try to hold costumed shoots every couple of months; these will be advertised in the upcoming events section.
The Canberra Archery Field is at Lyneham next to the National Hockey Centre. To get to the club house turn off Mouat Street into Riggall Pl, opposite Ginninderra Drv, at the intersection lights. Follow the road around behind the hockey ground to the Archery Club grounds.
If you don't have your own gear and would like to have a go please contact the Archery Marshall at archery@aaf.org.au so she can arrange for a bow to be available for you.
Picnic Feasts
We also hold irregular picnic feasts. These are an opportunity to show off the gear that you've made at Craft Nights and Armouring Workshops, and to play games like Kubb and Nine Men's Morris. Our fighters are graded on the quality of their gear and their safety standards, and on their skills at fighting. Bring along some food and enjoy the day.
Most picnic feasts are held our Lake Ginninderra training site (see above). Occasionally they are held at the ANU, at the bottom of Felows Oval. We will always announce when there is a picnic feast. See the Calendar on the right.
Armouring Workshops
Armouring Workshops are held irregularly, and according to demand, at David Ilowski's place: 5 Wollaston Pl, Stirling. These are opportunities for new members to make their first helmets and gauntlets, and for established members to improve the quality of their gear.
If you would like to attend an Armouring Workshop, please phone or email David.
